This temporal uncertainty is palpable at the level of the visuals, as authentically smudgy retro sprites scurry across dollhouse Unreal environments slathered in particle effects and depth of field. The vibe is almost analogous to steampunk, in that the game feels at once archaic and futuristic. But like its spiritual predecessors, the Bravely Default series, Octopath also lets you bend time a little, banking action points in order to perform several attacks in a single turn. It's a game that puts a familiar emphasis on timing, built around a turn-based battle system in which the ability to strike first often trumps how hard you hit. But this is, nonetheless, a world constructed according to a cosy old playbook, in which every town you visit has the same facilities and a lone citizen loitering for all eternity near the entrance, offering a crisp intro to all who visit. It engages with topics a JRPG of the mid-90s might shy away from: one of the playable characters is a sex worker, whose quest to avenge her father's death sees her grappling with the cruelty and chauvinism of an outwardly blissful medieval world. "New games in the old style" is the deceptively pat label Square Enix has adopted for smaller JRPG projects like Octopath Traveler, and one that invites an obvious question: which parts are old, and which parts are new? Far from a reprise of conventions from Final Fantasy 6 and before, Octopath is a curious medley of tradition and risk-taking. February 24th can’t come soon enough.Another fine turn-based battle system and some charming dialogue and visuals make up for an occasionally dry ensemble campaign. That said, I’m looking forward to all the stories. Plus, one of my friends wants to start with him. That said, he feels a little too stereotypical shounen protagonist and I am an insufferable hipster. He’s a ton of fun to play with, and I’m pleasantly surprised by the dark curse he apparently has. He’s probably still my favorite, but I don’t see him as a starter. I choked up a few times during her chapter. I wasn’t expecting much from her story, but it was beautifully done. That said, I love how versatile and self-sufficient the class is.Īgnea - Strong possibility. Mostly I like the idea of a runaway prisoner immediately joining up with our beloved blasphemous cleric. I might start with him on a later playthrough. I find the combination of her story and personality to be the least gripping. I’m normally a sucker for amnesia tropes, but her personality is a little too flat for me to jump into. Her story is also pretty serious.Ĭastti - Unlikely. I love this cheerful little weirdo who eats the friends she makes in the woods. I’ve fallen in love with these characters. It would have been more fun if that was left a little more ambiguous.īefore the demo, I thought my choice would be between Castti and Temenos. Same with Osvalds revenge story although i was a little disapointed that we know for sure he was set up and who set him up right from the start. Of the others Throné's story seems great but her quest to get away from a life of killing seems to only really affect her so it doesn't look like she has much of a reason to team up with the others. His story just fits very well if they have a similar end boss planned out even though Partitio seems like it has the potential to be the most interesting. Since the first game ended with a special boss who was not really all that closely connected to most of the stories I am tempted to pick Temenos. The most "main character" type story seems to be Hikari so I imagine a lot of people will go for him but imo Partitio and Temenos actually have the more intriguing world story with one trying to defeat poverty and the other likely carrying out an investigation into the Pontiff killing and likely setting up the fight against the evil god from his opening cutscene Temenos and Ochette are fighting it out for fourth place.Įdit 4: One good night's sleep later and Hikari has finally lost his second spot to Throné while even the Duck of Indecisiveness kicked Agnea over to last place, the poor girl. I was expecting more Partitio and Throné too.Įdit 2: Osvald and Hikari are still dominating the polls, Ochette overtook Temenos and put an end to the boys only club and lastly, Agnea and the Duck of Indecisiveness are still dead last.Įdit 3: After a slow start, Throné is now near the top next to the unbeatable Hikari and Osvald. Right now, Osvald and Hikari are in the lead with a whopping 29 and 26, I hadn't realized how popular both of them were as main picks. I'm still trying to decide between Throné, Ochette and Castti.Įdit: Thanks for the votes and comments so far people. Who are you starting with on release? And if you're still undecided, who are you trying to choose between? Let me know!
